LETTER TO S. J. DAHLMAN

I do not usually read articles in the Faith section of the Johnson City Press because there is generally nothing of any value. Your column caught my eye about the veto of the supposed torture bill and I have to ask you some questions regarding your position. It is obvious from your column’s title "Torture bill veto brings much into question," that you believe waterboarding is torture and should be abolished and it galls you that the President does not agree with you.

You write, "But this I do: the veto effectively forces Christians and other people of faith, for that matter–to make choices about their priorities and allegiances." Do you speak for all Christians? I know that you do not speak for me. I fully support President Bush’s decision to continue the interrogation method of waterboarding. He is protecting my life from attacks by people who desire to take my life. This is a point that has obviously slipped by you. You would rather protect the supposed rights of an enemy combatant rather than the lives of Americans.

Do other people of faith go to heaven or is Christianity an exclusive religion? The Lord Jesus Christ said that you were either for Him or against Him, meaning there is no neutrality. It is obvious that you are a gray area Christian seeking to be academically relevant rather than being theologically relevant. You have sold your birthright for a mess of academic relevance.

Your position does not differ at all from an atheist. Does God torture His enemies in the lake of fire for all eternity? Remember, this verse is found in the New Testament.

The Lord Jesus Christ is an exception and not the norm. He is exceptional in that He is God. What kind of enemies did he forgive from the cross? Christ’s death on the cross was to fulfill the law of God of a life for life. The principle expressed is the punishment is commensurate with the crime.

You have failed to distinguish what kind of enemies we are talking about and about good and evil. Are terrorists good or evil? You want to give pity to those who do not deserve pity. Innocent people deserve pity, not the guilty. Deuteronomy 7:16 reads, "And thou shalt consume all the people which the Lord thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee." God (who is immutable) said that the guilty do not deserve pity or mercy. The War on Terror is a war against evil men who desire to do harm to innocent people. Biblically, they deserve no pity.

Ask yourself why you feel guilty about what these interrogators are doing to these terrorists. Unless you learn to introspect about these why questions, you will remain superficial in your thinking. Your thinking is sense based.

Ask yourself a question, why do you think waterboarding is torture? I do not think that it is because I understand the principle behind what is being done. You are anti-conceptual. All that you are basing your decision on is what you can see with your physical eyes. You lack the ability of discrimination between torture of an innocent person and interrogation of a war enemy.

One good thing is that you are not the Commander in Chief. I would fear for my life because you would want to treat terrorists with kid gloves. It is because you, more than anything else, are an antinomian. You hate Old Testament law with all your heart. You have no social or war theory and your policies effectively turn the world over to Satan and his henchmen, the terrorists.
